F1 Commission: The Debate Over Mandatory Two-Stop Races (2025)

A bold proposal to shake up Formula 1 racing is causing quite a stir! The idea of making two pitstops mandatory in every race has sparked intense debate within the F1 Commission. While some see it as a way to add excitement and tactical variety, others worry it could lead to a predictable strategy for all teams.

The fourth F1 Commission meeting of the year, held in London, discussed this controversial topic. Despite initial skepticism, the concept has gained traction after a series of races with limited strategic options. Pirelli's recent introduction of a 'step' in tire compounds aimed to address this, but teams still managed one-stop races.

But here's where it gets interesting...

James Vowles, team principal of Williams, expressed concern: "We might all end up doing the same strategy, lap after lap." As a former Mercedes strategist, Vowles knows the pros and cons well.

Andrea Stella, McLaren's boss, agreed: "We've seen one-stop and two-stop strategies work, but with mandatory two stops, that variety might disappear."

Pirelli's preferred approach is not to force two stops, but to make the choice between one or two stops more nuanced.

And this is the part most people miss...

The F1 Commission is also considering adjustments to tire specifications and limits, aiming for more strategic flexibility.

"A proposal to explore mandatory two pitstops was discussed alongside adjustments to tire rules," the FIA confirmed.

No decisions were made, but talks will continue into the 2026 season.

Another intriguing development...

The Commission also addressed the issue of car liveries. To enhance visual differentiation, a minimum surface area of 55% for paint or stickers has been proposed, reducing the amount of bare carbon fiber.

This measure aims to improve the TV spectacle, ensuring teams meet the minimum weight limit without compromising on aesthetics.

So, what do you think? Should F1 mandate two pitstops to add excitement, or is it a recipe for predictable racing? And how do you feel about the new livery rules? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
